Second Chance Romance in ‘Anyway I’m Falling in Love With You’

Anyway I'm Falling in Love With You
“What scares me most is the thought of losing you to someone else. I won’t live with regret… I want to be your first and your last boyfriend”- Kizuki Hazawa

I was always team Kizuki.

The anime winter season is coming to an end. One anime that stood out to me was “Anyway I’m Falling in Love With You” season 2.

I am a sucker for a second-chance romance, but a question sticks out. Does Kizuki deserve a second chance? And to follow on that, should Mizuho have given Shin a chance?

Kizuki reminds me of a puppy you just want to cuddle. Despite this, he royally messed up. He broke up with Mizuho in the worst way possible.

Three years later, he comes back with the intention of getting Mizuho back. Kizuki’s greatest strength is his determination to achieve his desires. He is not afraid to pursue them, even if it involves personal challenges (or, in this case, her). At the same time, I think it was totally unfair. He barged himself back into Mizuho’s life. He did this without even talking about what made him leave in the first place.

And yes, we get that conversation towards the end of the season, but it lasted for about three minutes, and Mizuho declared that she loves him back.

Personally, I don’t think Mizuho should have taken back Kizuki. If anything, they should have remained friends. From what we saw, she has truly been heartbroken over their breakup, and it didn’t look like she was over it.

But I do prefer Kizuki over Shin. Why, you might ask? Because Kizuki took action, rather than standing on the sidelines, unlike Shin.

Shin had been in love with Kiuzki since middle school, but always stayed in the shadows because he felt comfortable with just being friends while subtly flirting with her.

It wasn’t until Kizuki made his intention clear with Mizuho that we (the viewers) saw Shin start to take small steps to confess his feelings, but it was too late.

Fast forward 10 years, and Shin finds himself in the same position and loses the love of his life to Kizuki.

And this is why we don’t date within the friend group. Because now everything is messy.

I  mean, Shin became a doctor in part because of Mizuho, got her father’s “permission” to propose.

But after holding a torch for her for so long, he should have never said, “Let me take you out and see if I still love you.”

He should have just flat-out asked her out. But nothing came out of that because we never saw them go out on a date.

I do believe that if Shugo (another person in the friend group) were more confident, Mizuho would have dated him.

If you want the girl, get the girl. Don’t wait for your biggest competition to come back home to make a half-ass move.

You have to shoot your shot, or else you’ll miss everything. And that is what separated Kizuki and Shin. One went for it with everything he had while the other waited.

I would have loved for Mizuho to explore a possible future with Shin now that they are older, but in the end, she never saw him in a romantic way. It was always Kizuki.
